The Wisdom of Water
by Pamela Schneider
Following the path of least resistance, water weaves through the land absorbing wisdom from all it touches. Carving a path of its own through Earth and stone, ancient yet fresh and new, water reminds us that with time, and even through the raging storms, all things are possible.
This series was painted using natural earth pigments mulled with walnut on cradled birch panels using fifteenth century techniques. The larger piece is the first I've done with this method and I just love the way the wood shows through the paint to add to the depth and texture.Painting is an intuitive process for me, I choose a palette based on what I feel inspired by, and let the blank slate before me speak.
As this series unfolded, the essence of water came through quite strongly and
each one of these paintings represents a different type of watery expression.
One reminds me of a deliciously rainy day, another of ocean waves lapping against the shore, and the largest one began with an under layer that reminded me of standing at the edge of the water and watching the waves lick my toes, then ended up reminding me of a stormy glacial lake.
